Nail fungus

A fungal nail is a nail affected by a fungal infection. It is also known as a chalk nail. Fungal nails discolour, become thicker and brittle and, in some cases, are bothersome in daily activities. It is usually not clear where you contract a fungal infection. Fungi are everywhere, including in gyms, swimming pools and other public places. Factors that can promote a fungal infection are:

  • Warm and moist climate
  • Damage to the nail;
  • Malfunctioning blood circulation in the feet.
  • Reduced immunity.

Fungal nail infections are very common. It is more common in toenails than fingernails, especially the big toes. But the fingernails can also be affected.

Treatment

Until recently, it was difficult to treat nail fungus properly. Applying ointment or liquids to the nail usually does not lead to the desired results. The use of tablets is a possibility, but sometimes causes side effects and must be used for a long time (at least 3 months for fungal toenails). In addition, it is often not compatible with the use of other medications.

Laser treatment

The latest treatment in the field of nail fungus is laser treatment. Clinical studies show that this laser treatment can provide sustained improvement in about half of patients. During treatment, the laser light destroys the fungi without damaging the nail, nail bed or surrounding skin. The laser heats only the nail, destroying the fungi. This heat is felt but well tolerated. The affected part of the nail grows out over the following months, making way for a healthy nail.

Number of treatments

Fungal nails are treated four times, each time at an interval of one to three weeks. After these four treatments, a check-up appointment is made, sometimes additional treatment is advised. It usually takes several months to more than a year for the nail to return to health. How long it takes for you to regain a healthy nail depends on the extent of the fungal infection and your personal circumstances.
