Eric Vrijhof worked as a urologist and also trainer at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven for 26 years. On 1 July 2025, he started working as a urologist at the Parkwegkliniek Sommer in Maastricht.
Besides general urology, he has always had a special interest in urological oncology and male sexuality and fertility disorders (andrology). On the latter subject, he obtained his PhD in Leiden in 2006. He was also nationally active in several working groups and committees of the Dutch Society of Urology (NVU).
In his early years at Catharina Hospital, he introduced bladder replacement surgery to patients with bladder cancer. In subsequent years, he increasingly focused on prostate cancer and BPH, culminating in the establishment of Prosper: a centralised robotic centre in Nijmegen, formed by Catharina Hospital, CWZ, Radboud and MMC. Prosper grew to become one of the preferred referral centres for robotic surgery in the Netherlands.
Vrijhof is a staunch supporter of prostate cancer screening, an issue that is also increasingly being promoted by the European Health Commission (EU4Health). He sees the careful selection of patients eligible for screening as essential, and he is working on this project by project.
In the field of BPH, he introduced the minimally invasive Urolift technique (endoscopic, non-invasive anchoring of the prostate lobes) in the Netherlands. He wrote the approval application to health insurers for this, which eventually led to national reimbursement. This treatment method is now used in several clinics.
Regarding male sexuality and fertility disorders, he specialised in penile prosthetic surgery and the surgical correction of penile curvature in Peyronie's disease. He also developed a stent that can be placed in the vas deferens, applied in restorative surgery after vasectomy, on which he obtained his PhD.
With great passion and energy for his profession, Eric Vrijhof dedicates himself at Parkweg Clinic Sommer to putting his knowledge and experience at the service of patients with urological problems. He does this with care and dedication, aiming to provide the best possible care.
