An ulcus cruris is also called a leg ulcer. This is a wound on the lower leg. This wound is not healing and is often present for months, sometimes even years. Among the elderly, about 2% suffers from a leg ulcer. The causes are multiple. Generally, there is a problem with the blood vessels of the leg. These have to be checked carefully before choosing an adequate treatment. This can facilitate the healing of the wound.
Before starting treatment, the dermatologist will investigate the cause of the open leg. Depending on the diagnosis, different treatments may be started. The most important thing is usually to get the fluid (oedema) out of the leg. When there is less fluid in the leg, the open leg usually heals on its own. This can be achieved in various ways: bandage, bandage stocking, varicose vein treatment. In the consultation, the dermatologist will discuss which treatment will be started.
