Anja Sommer studied medicine in Germany and the Netherlands. From 1998, she specialised as a dermatologist at Maastricht University Hospital.
Outside general dermatology, her main interests were in the treatment of varicose veins and skin cancer.
In the field of varicose veins, she mastered the latest techniques (endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation, Foam treatment, steam technique) in addition to the usual procedures such as Muller technique and sclerosing.
Anja Sommer is a member of the Varices guideline working group that revised the existing 2007 guideline. This guideline was recently published. Also, an extension of the guidelines for neo-varices is currently being formulated, July 2015.
Fellow dermatologist N Shadid recently received his PhD on the thesis titled : "Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy for treating varicose veins". Dr Sommer was involved in this research as co-supervisor.
