Vaginal laser

Laser treatment for vaginal disorders

A revolutionary breakthrough in non-hormonal treatment of post-menopausal vaginal complaints. The SheLase laser has been available in the Netherlands for about 10 years. Since 2013, more than 100,000 treatments have already been performed worldwide. The women treated are very enthusiastic about this new non-hormonal treatment of vaginal complaints. There are several scientific publications on the effect of this laser. These described the positive effect on which the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this treatment method. In dermatology, the fractional CO2 laser has been used for years to treat scars from acne or burns and, in recent years, also for skin rejuvenation. From these experiences, the scope of application has been extended also for mucosal abnormalities such as in vaginal disorders.

SheLase benefits:

  • Best non-hormonal treatment for vaginal atrophy
  • Treatment is painless
  • Treatment is safe
  • Treatment is outpatient
  • Treatment has longlasting result

Do you suffer from vaginal discomfort in way of:

  • Itching and burning sensation
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Reoccurring infections
  • Wounds at the entrance of the vagina
  • Reoccuring inflammation of the bladder
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Slight urine-loss

These are common complaints due to vaginal atrophy (thinning of the vaginal wall and mucous membrane). About 40% of postmenopausal women experience symptoms of vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy occurs due to a deficiency of oestrogens. The ovaries no longer make oestrogens after menopause, this reduces collagen in the vaginal wall, making it increasingly thin, vulnerable during intercourse and easily accessible to infections. Due to the lack of collagen, the vaginal wall not only becomes thinner but also loses its natural elasticity. In addition, hydration decreases due to reduced blood flow. The environment of the vagina changes which can cause the aforementioned symptoms. Menopause is sometimes brought forward by treatment with chemotherapy or radiation.

Laser technology also helps women with stress incontinence: a mild form of urine leakage. Today, these patients often make do with pelvic floor exercises,

but the laser offers an alternative solution. For mild incontinence, laser treatment can even replace surgery.

Treatment

Laser treatment restores the structure of the vaginal wall. The laser creates a permanent change in the structure of the vagina, restoring moisture levels. Itching and pain are thus a thing of the past. In addition, the laser treatment tightens the tissue of the vaginal wall, preventing it from pressing against the urethra. Removing pressure at the urethra prevents unwanted urine leakage when moving. One to three treatments are needed. This varies with each patient. After each treatment, the effect is discussed and it is determined whether a follow-up appointment is needed. The treatment is painless, so no anaesthetic is needed. The patient can resume her daily activities immediately after treatment.

SheLase vs. other lasers

Other lasers on the market for vaginal treatments, use only the ablative wavelength. To stimulate collagen, at least the 1540 nm operation is needed. Collagen stimulation from a CO2 laser alone, is considerably less effective. Combining both wavelengths, which is possible with the SheLase, actually stimulates the deeper layers, bringing better results.
